Come and See

Twenty-Fifth Sunday After Pentecost, November 11, 2018, First Trinity Lutheran Church – Our Gospel text for today is a story that many of us have probably heard many times. A poor widow goes into the temple and gives all that she has to the treasury (which isn’t that much – the two coins mentioned were worth pennies, in our currency). Other, wealthier people are also there, and they too are making offerings, but it’s out of their abundance. Jesus contrasts the giving of the wealthy – they have so much that they won’t miss what they’re giving to the temple – with that of the widow – she doesn’t have much, but she’s still giving it all, to the point that she has nothing left to live on.
